Over the last several months, the headlines have come wave after wave, leaving many of us unsettled. We’ve all felt the weight of it in one way or another. Tragedies and conflicts fill the news, and the sheer volume can feel crushing. Yet even in the midst of this, God’s peace draws near, reminding us that He has not left us alone.
Fear, grief, anger, and uncertainty ripple quickly through homes, churches, and even social media. They stir questions close to the heart: Could this happen to us? Could it happen to someone we love? What does the future hold? And where can peace be found in all of this?
When tragedy unfolds, it reminds us of our fragility. It confronts us with the rawness of evil and how close it can feel. Anxiety may tug at our sleep. Anger and grief may swirl. And many of us find ourselves wondering where God is in the midst of it all.
Into such times, Paul’s words to the Philippians speak as a balm for the soul:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)
What Paul Offers: A Pathway Through Fear
Paul doesn’t dismiss fear, anxiety, or grief. He doesn’t ask us to ignore questions that weigh on the soul. Instead, he offers a way forward: prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving.
Prayer and supplication: Honest words from the heart. Sometimes whispered in the night, sometimes poured out with tears. This is how we place into God’s hands what we cannot carry alone. Healing can begin as we entrust our hidden places of fear, anxiety, and vulnerability to Him.
With thanksgiving: This isn’t a denial of fear, anxiety, or pain, but a choice of faith. Thanksgiving says, “I trust Your character, even if I do not understand.” It shifts our gaze away from fear and back toward the goodness and trustworthiness of God.
The Peace That Surpasses Understanding
When prayer and thanksgiving come together, Paul tells us that a supernatural peace enters in. This peace doesn’t come from explanation or reasoning. It comes from God Himself. It is strong enough to guard our hearts from despair and steady our minds when fear threatens to spiral.
The questions and concerns we carry may not vanish overnight. But God’s peace is greater, and it becomes the anchor that steadies us.
Elijah House Principles in Action
At Elijah House, we believe that God heals the heart when truth, love, acceptance, and confession are welcomed in. In times like these, we can lean into those principles together:
- Confession: Naming our fears, admitting our grief, and being honest before God.
- Acceptance of God’s love: Resting in the truth that He sees, that He cares, and that He is near.
- Forgiveness: Releasing resentment or bitterness, which only deepen fear and anxiety.
- Thanksgiving: Remembering His past faithfulness, even in small things, and thanking Him for the peace He promises.
If fear has been stirred in your soul, if anxiety feels close at hand, we invite you to step into what God offers through Paul’s words and through the time-tested principles of heart healing.
Perhaps take a moment now, and let these words become our prayer together:
Father God, the world feels broken and unsafe in this hour. We bring to You the fears in our hearts: fear for those we love, fear for the future, fear for what we cannot control. We lay these before You, along with our grief and questions.
Yet we choose thanksgiving. Thank You that You are sovereign, that Your purposes are higher than ours. Thank You that You see what we cannot see. Thank You for Your protecting presence today. Thank You for the hope that cannot be taken away. We ask for Your peace, the peace that surpasses understanding, to guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Amen.
